DAUGHTERS OF THE CROSS, also known as SISTERS OF SAINT ANDREW. – Institute founded at Maille, diocese of Poitiers, in 1807 by St Andrew Uberto Fournet and St Joan Elizabeth Bichier des Ages for various works of apostolate, for the instruction of youth, and for the care of the sick. First approved by the French bishops, then by the Holy See in 1867, the institute, spread throughout Europe, America, and China, numbers over 2000 sisters in 262 houses divided into 6 religious provinces.
