### GARETNER, CORBINIAN
Canonist and Austrian theologian, born at Schwaz in the Tyrol on 14 June 1751, died at Salzburg on 24 May 1824. Benedictine in the abbey of St Peter at Salzburg in 1769, priest in 1774, professor from 1790 of canon law at the university of that city, later of diplomatics and private law (from 1792) and, from 1804, of civil procedure and feudal law. Privy councillor at the imperial court of justice (1805); last rector of the University of Salzburg (1806–11).
### GAETA
Ancient city of Latium, situated on a promontory on the Gulf of Gaeta. According to tradition, it was founded by the Ausonians and later became a Roman colony. In the Middle Ages it was the seat of a diocese, suffragan of Capua. In 846 it was sacked by the Saracens, and in 1140 it became a free commune. In 1289 it was the birthplace of the writer Francesco Patrizi (1460), a friend of Pius II. In 1518 the suppressed diocese of Fondi (q.v.) was annexed to that of Gaeta, which Pius IX, in memory of the hospitality he had received there during his exile, raised to an archbishopric on 31 December 1849, Ludovico Parisi being bishop.
In the diocese was the monastery of S. Angelo di Bolzanzo, suppressed in 1788 (Cod. dipl. Caietani, II, p. 107), whose church is already noted in a charter of 839.
### MONUMENTS
Besides Roman remains and the castle of Swabian origin, enlarged by Charles V, the following are noteworthy: the church of S. Giovanni a mare, also called S. Giuseppe, built in the 12th century; the cathedral, consecrated on 22 January 1106 by Paschal II and rebuilt in 1792, which, with valuable paintings and sculptures of various periods, preserves the paschal choir column (13th century) and the bell tower of the second half of the 12th century; the churches of S. Lucia, with remains from the 13th and 15th centuries, of S. Domenico, with remains from the 9th century, and of the Annunziata, founded in 1321 and rebuilt in 1621. In the fissure of the split mountain is the sanctuary of the Crucifix of the 15th century.
