GENOUDE, ANTOINE-ETIENNE de. - Priest and polemicist, b. at Montélimar on 9 Feb. 1792, d. at Hyères (Var) on 19 Apr. 1849. Educated at the Seminary of Saint-Sulpice, he then took up journalism, reviving the *Gazette de France* and devoting his effective talents to the service of religion. Later, after the death of his wife in 1834, he was ordained priest and added to his activity as a writer the fruitful work of preaching. Less fortunate was his election as deputy to the Chamber, for from the political rostrum he expressed Gallican ideas.
Among his many works the following deserve mention: after his versions of some books of the Old Testament (Isaiah [Paris 1815], Job [ibid. 1818], Psalms [ibid. 1819]), he produced the complete Holy Scripture: *Sainte Bible d'après les textes sacrés, avec la Vulgate* (23 vols., ibid. 1820-24), widely circulated and reprinted, though not free from inaccuracies; *La raison du christianisme, ou preuves de la religion tirées des écrits des plus grands hommes* (12 vols., ibid. 1834-35); *Les Pères de l'Église* (French tr., 7 vols., ibid. 1835-49).
