GIUBERTO of GEMBLOUX. — Benedictine hagiographer and abbot, born c. 1125, died after 1213. A monk at Gembloux and Tours, he became abbot of Florennes c. 1187 and of Gembloux in 1194, retiring from the latter in 1204.
He celebrated the glories of St Martin of Tours in several works: *Vita s. Martini* (partially edited in A. Pitra, *Analecta sacra*, VIII, Montecassino 1881, pp. 584–91): a lengthy rhythmic composition; *De laudibus s. Martini opuscola duo* (ibid., pp. 582–600); *Quatuor epistulae de cultu s. Martini apud Turonenses* (ed. in *Analecta Bollandiana*, 3 [1884], pp. 217–57); *Ep. de s. Martino* (ed. H. Delehaye, ibid., 7 [1888], pp. 256–382, with an erudite introduction).
An admirer of St Hildegard, he hosted her (1177–79) and maintained correspondence with her (*PL* 211, 1287–1312). He also wrote the history of the fire at Gembloux Abbey (*ibid.*, 160, 657–62) and an *Epistola ad Idam abbatissam Montis S. Roberti* (ed. by the Bollandists, *Catalogs codicum hagiograph. Biblioth. regiae Bruxellensis*, I, Brussels 1886, pp. 557–61).
