JUDAS ISCARIOT. — Apostle, infamous for having betrayed Jesus. Son of a Simon from the town of Qerijjōth (Jn 6:72; 13:2-26), perhaps the present-day Hürbet el-Qarjatejn, a town in southern Judea, he was called to the apostolate (Lk 6:16) and appointed administrator of the group of the “Twelve” (Jn 12:6; 13:29). He betrayed his Master for thirty pieces of silver (Mt 26:14-15 and parallel texts). A guest at the Last Supper, he does not appear to have taken part in the Eucharistic Communion (Jn 13:2-32).
