JUDAS OF GALILEE. - Leader of one of the revolts that broke out in Palestine against Roman rule, on the occasion of the census ordered by the senator P. Sulpicius Quirinius, legate in Syria (6-7 B.C.). G. was a native of Gamala in Gaulanitis, but generally called the "Galilean." It does not appear that he was identical with Judas, son of Hezekiah, who led the insurrection after the death of Herod the Great (4 B.C.).
Having joined with the Pharisee Saddok, G. proclaimed disobedience to the Romans, declaring it unworthy that a Jew should tolerate "mortal masters after God" (Flavius Josephus, Bell. Jud., II, § 118; Antiq. Jud., XVIII, §§ 4-9, 23-25). After various clashes G. was killed; but the revolt did not remain without effects. Its initial success is documented by the brief recollection of Gamaliel 25 years later (Acts 5:37). The action of this popular leader also had a religious-messianic motive: he intended to hasten the coming of the Messiah, liberator from Roman tyranny. Having failed in his attempt, G. had continuators in the Zealots (v.). In 46-48 A.D. the procurator Tiberius Alexander had two sons of G. crucified (Fl. Josephus, Antiq. Jud., XX, § 102). Another of his sons, Menahem, was one of the principal insurgents against the Romans in 66 A.D. (id., Bell. Jud., II, §§ 433-48).
