JUSTUS OF TIBERIAS. - Jewish patriot and historian of the 1st century A.D. Of J.'s life only as much is known as his adversary Flavius Josephus reports in his autobiography. During the insurrection against the Romans in 66-70 J. played an important part in the defense of his native city. Following the Roman advance J. took refuge in the neighboring kingdom of Agrippa II (v.).

Condemned to death by Vespasian, he was punished only with a long imprisonment by Agrippa (Fl. Josephus, Vita, §§ 343, 410). He then lived at the court of Agrippa, who was forced to punish him often, despite the protection of Berenice (ibid., §§ 335, 356). J. lived until about the year 100 A.D., since his Chronicle extended to the death of Agrippa II (who died in 100 A.D. according to J. of T. cited by Photius, but probably died already in the years 93-94).

The works of J., all lost, were: a History of the Jewish War, against which Flavius Josephus (v.) wrote his apologetic Vita; a Chronicle of the Jewish kings from Moses to Agrippa II; perhaps some brief commentaries on the Bible, of which only St. Jerome speaks (De viris illustribus, 14).
