MARIN-SOLA, FRANCISCO. - Dominican theologian, born at Carcar (Spain) on 22 Nov. 1873, died at Manila on 5 June 1932. Having landed in the Philippines (17 July 1897) and been ordained priest on 18 Sept. following, he was sent as a missionary to the north of the island of Luzon, where he remained for 16 months a prisoner in the hands of the insurgents. Returning at the beginning of 1900 to Manila, he began teaching at the College of St John Lateran. Owing to his frail health he frequently changed his residence; in 1906 he taught at Avila, shortly afterwards again in the Philippines (University of St Thomas), then in the United States, and from 1918 to 1927 at Fribourg.
Nevertheless, M. also showed great zeal for ecclesiastical life, especially in Rome, with works of charity for the poor, restorations of basilicas and efforts for the reform of clerics and monks. A letter from his successor Agapito II states that he invested the Archbishop of Mainz with the title of Apostolic Vicar of Jerusalem and Gaul, thus reviving an institution in force in the time of St Boniface in 946.
