MARINONI, GIOVANNI, blessed. — In the world Francesco Maria, born in Venice in 1490 to a Bergamasque family, died in Naples on 13 Dec. 1562. He was one of the first disciples of s. Gaetano Thiene, from whom he received in Venice the habit of the Regular Clerics (1529), being already a priest and canon of S. Marco.

In 1533 he moved with the founder to Naples for the establishment of a Theatine community, and in that city he exercised a manifold apostolate, working especially for the conversion of Waldensian and crypto-Lutheran circles. A faithful interpreter of the Theatine spirit, he declined the archbishopric of Naples (1555) and was spiritual master of s. Andrea Avellino and of b. Paolo Burali. The popular cult rendered to b. M. was recognized by Innocenzo XIII (11 Sept. 1762).
