MARINONI, Giovanni, Blessed. - In the world Francesco Maria, born in Venice in 1490 to a family from Bergamo, died in Naples on 13 Dec. 1562. He was one of the first disciples of St. Cajetan of Thiene, from whom he received in Venice the habit of the Clerics Regular (1529), being already a priest and a canon of St. Mark's.
In 1533, together with the founder, he moved to Naples for the establishment of a Theatine community, and in that city he carried out a many-sided apostolate, working especially for the conversion of the Waldensian and crypto-Lutheran circles. A faithful interpreter of the Theatine spirit, he declined the archbishopric of Naples (1555) and was spiritual director of St. Andrew Avellino and of the blessed Paolo Burali. The popular cult paid to the blessed M. was recognized by Innocent XIII (11 Sept. 1762).
