BURALI, PAOLO d'Arezzo, beato. - Born at Itri in 1511. He received his doctorate in law at Bologna and practiced as a lawyer in Naples with such success that in 1550 he was appointed counselor of the Council of S. Chiara; he held, though reluctantly, political and legal offices on behalf of the city. An austere, pious, charitable man, he felt a strong religious vocation and entered the Order of the TheatineRegular Clerics in 1557, changing his baptismal name Scipione to that of Paolo. He refused offices and bishoprics, but in 1568 he was forced by Pius V to accept the see of Piacenza, where he convened the synod in 1570 and carried out the active work of a pastor, establishing schools, hospices, orphanages and the seminary. In 1570 Pius V raised him to the cardinalate.
He was a member of the cardinalatial commission charged with applying the decrees of the Council of Trent and with the reform of the clergy, and he worked to ensure that the obligation of residence on the part of bishops was observed. In 1576 he was transferred to the archiepiscopal see of Naples, which he governed until his death, which occurred on 17 June 1578. Such was the holiness of his life that Philip Neri lamented his death as a mourning for all Christendom. He was beatified on 13 May 1772 by Clement XIV. Feast day 17 June.
