BUONVICINO (BONVICINO), AMBROGIO. — Sculptor and stucco artist, b. in Milan in 1552, d. in 1622 in Rome, where he had moved in 1581. Trained under Prospero Antichi (il Bresciano), he attained a good mastery of his craft, but remained a weak and superficial composer. His principal works are in Rome: the statues of David and Ezekiel (1599) in S. Giovanni in Laterano, the bas-relief with Charles VI and the fortifications of Ferrara (1612) and that with Clement VIII (1613), both in the Pauline Chapel of S. Maria Maggiore, the statue of Urban VIII in S. Maria sopra Minerva, and some accessory sculptures for S. Peter’s, etc.
