He belongs to the group of Lombard artists who, under the pontificates of Gregory XIII and Sixtus V, contributed to the renewal of the city, prolonging in sculpture a Mannerism that was both eclectic and academic, destined to exhaust itself in weary and monotonous forms before the Berninian renewal. Of the few surviving works (many executed in stucco have been destroyed), one of the finest is the *Nativity* in the Sistine Chapel of S. Maria Maggiore, in which P. still appears faithful to the Sansovinesque tradition and errs in Lombard effects of pictorial illusionism with a landscape background (Venturi); the best known is the colossal, most ungainly statue of *Moses* for the Mostra dell’Acqua Felice, in which Michelangelesque influence resolves itself into a vacuous and theatrical search for grandeur. Other works: *The Deposition of Gregory XIII* in St Peter’s Basilica and the models for the four lions at the base of the obelisk of St Peter.
