In numerous works he signs himself "disciple of Giovanni Bellini," but his temperament as a facile and rapid assimilator led him to be linked from time to time with various other artists: in his youthful period, the happiest, with Cima and Carpaccio, from whom he takes a clarity of plastic construction and a freshness and luminosity of color that are among the greatest merits of his works. To these years belong a Madonna with Donor of 1502 (Museo civico of Padua), a Sacra conversazione in Berlin, a Marriage of St. Catherine at the National Gallery in London (another very similar one in S. Giobbe in Venice) and the very beautiful Annunciation of the Sanctuary of Meschio (Vittorio Veneto), whose luminous landscape confirms the attribution made to P. of the little pastoral scenes of the National Gallery, formerly believed to be by Giorgione. From 1510 until his death P. is in Bergamo, where he comes under the very marked influence of Lotto, who settled in that city shortly after him. From this period are: the Baptist and other saints of the church of S. Spirito (1515), still akin to the Bellinians, of the Catena and Basaiti type, the Madonna with the Casotti Family of the Accademia Carrara, decidedly Lottesque, rich in color but with an unpleasant bombast of forms that will be found again, increased, in later works: the Crucifixion of 1523, in S. Alessandro della Croce, the St. Benedict and Saints of the Cathedral (1521). Other works: a youthful St. Sebastian at Aix (Longhi), the Trinity of Alzano Maggiore (1517), etc.
