BUSSOLA, Dionigi. — Lombard sculptor, d. 1687. He trained in Rome within the Berninian and Algardian milieu; from 1645 he worked for Milan Cathedral, executing decorative works and statues: St. Maximus and St. Anastasius (in the transept); St. Andrew (1652), St. Dorothy (1674) — among his best for modelling and finish — Habakkuk (1679) on the façade, executed in collaboration with his son Carlo, as was the bas-relief with Cain and Abel (1666). B. also worked for the Certosa of Pavia (bas-reliefs with the Nativity of Christ [1675] and the Slaughter of the Innocents [1677]). His compositions are well-constructed and balanced; his statues are generally inferior, often conventional and mannered.
