BREGNO, ANTONIO. - Called A. da Como. Sculptor, b. at Righeggia (Como), active with his brother Paolo in the 15th century in Venice, where their only securely attributed work is preserved, the tomb of Doge Francesco Foscari (d. 1457): a sumptuous monument, in which Renaissance motifs are superimposed upon Gothic elements. On the basis of stylistic affinities with the Foscari monument, certain statues of the Doge's Palace are attributed to A. B., as well as those of Fortitude and Temperance on the Porta della Carta. It is further believed that A. B. can be identified with that "Antonio da Rigesio da Como" who in 1425-26 was working with a "maestro Paolo" at the Ca' d'Oro, under the direction of Mattia Roversi. The erroneous identification of A. B. with Antonio Rizzo (A. Venturi, Storia dell'Arte, VI, Milan 1908, p. 1058) originates with F. Sansovino (Venetia Città nobilissima, Venice 1581, pp. 66a; 119 b).
