BREGNO, ANTONIO

BREGNO, ANTONIO. - Known as A. da Como. Sculptor, born at Righeggia (Como), active with his brother Paolo in fifteenth-century Venice, where their only certain work is preserved, the tomb of Doge Francesco Foscari (d. 1457): a sumptuous monument in which Renaissance motifs are superimposed upon Gothic elements. On the basis of stylistic affinities with the Foscari monument, several statues in the Ducal Palace, and those of Fortitude and Temperance on the Porta della Carta, are attributed to A. B. It is further believed possible to identify A. B. with the « Antonio da Rigesio da Como » who in 1425-26 worked with a « maestro Paolo » at the Ca' d'Oro, under Mattia Roversi. The erroneous identification of A. B. with Antonio Rizzo (A. Venturi, Storia dell'Arte, VI, Milano 1908, p. 1058) originates with F. Sansovino (Venetia Città nobilissima, Venezia 1581, pp. 66a; 119 b).
