BUSSI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. - Cardinal, from a noble Viterbese family, b. in 1656 at Viterbo, d. at Rome in 1726. Pope Innocent XII, recognizing his profound learning and appreciating his priestly zeal displayed in Rome during a period of very grave epidemic, appointed him inter-nuncio of Flanders, which at that time was agitated by Calvinist and Jansenist theories. B. v. carried out an intelligent and energetic work, succeeding in restoring a little calm among those populations. For these merits he was appointed by Clement XI titular archbishop of Tarsus and, shortly afterwards, sent to Cologne as nuncio of Lower Germany. In 1710 he was called to govern the diocese of Ancona and, three years later, received the cardinal's hat. By Benedict XIII he was appointed visitor of the basilica of Loreto.
