BUSSI, GIOVANNI ANDREA. - Humanist, b. at Vigevano in 1417, d. at Rome in 1475. Having obtained his doctorate at the Sorbonne, he taught at the Studium of Genoa; Pope Nicholas V summoned him to Rome in 1451 into his secretariat; in 1461 he was consecrated bishop of Accia in Corsica and shortly afterwards promoted archbishop of the diocese of Aleria. Prefect of the Vatican Library, he was extremely active in collecting and revising ancient codices, of which he oversaw splendid editiones principes from the Roman printing house of Swayne and Pannartz. His personal library was famous, rich in rare and precious copies. He was renowned among scholars under the title of episcopus aleriensis, or also as Vigecius (from his native town).
