CHARLES VI, Emperor. - N. in Vienna on 1 Oct. 1685, d. there on 20 Oct. 1740. His name is linked to the War of the Spanish Succession, to the war against the Turks concluded with the Peace of Belgrade of 1739, to the struggle for the Pragmatic Sanction and to the diplomatic complications that followed: C. with the Pragmatic Sanction of Apr. 1713 regulated the succession of his states; with the death of his firstborn Leopold the problem became more acute because the succession was to pass to his daughter Maria Theresa; the Pragmatic Sanction was proclaimed only in 1724 after the approval of the diets of the countries of the empire, but only in 1748, with the Peace of Aix-la-Chapelle, did it receive its practical recognition. Internally, C.'s government signifies the apogee of Austrian culture, in the broadest sense, religion, art, commerce: the great residences, Vienna and Prague, were renewed in this period with the Baroque splendor that remained their characteristic.
