MARINO II, PAPA

MARINUS II, Pope. - Also designated by the name Martin III. On the death of Stephen VIII, in Oct. 942, Alberic II designated as his successor the Roman priest M. II, who was closely bound to him and obedient to him.

However, M. also showed himself very zealous for ecclesiastical life, especially in Rome, with works of charity for the poor, restorations of the basilicas, and the effort for the reform of the clergy and the monks. A letter of his successor Agapetus II says that he invested the archbishop of Mainz with the title of apostolic vicar of Germany and Gaul, thus renewing an institution in force at the time of St. Boniface. M. in 946.
