STEPHEN VIII (IX), Pope. - A Roman, elected on
14 July 939, he performed no act worthy of note during his brief pontificate; d. in Oct. 942.

Alberic, who had procured the tiara for him, monopolized
the temporal power. Nevertheless the Pope intervened in favor
of Louis IV, son of Charles the Simple, and threatened with excommunication his unruly subjects; this forestalled any resistance against the King of France. The pacification of minds was, moreover, facilitated by the granting of the archbishopric of Reims and of the pallium to Hugh, son of one of the
strongest adversaries of the sovereign.
