STEPHEN IV (V), Pope. - Of a Roman family, on June 22, 816, he gathered without difficulty the votes of the Roman clergy for election to the papal throne.
He did not wait to receive the authorization of Louis the Pious before receiving episcopal consecration, which took place on June 22. However, so as not to offend the Emperor's sensibilities, he took care to have the Roman people swear an oath of fidelity to him; and furthermore he sent two envoys to notify him of his election and to inform him in advance of his imminent arrival. In the following October, at Reims, he succeeded in persuading Louis to receive from his hands the liturgical anointing and a rich golden crown. Great was the value of this papal act, because it implied for the Emperor the necessity of having recourse to the Pope for the full exercise of his powers; and, moreover, it created in any case a second precedent. S. also obtained permission to return to Rome for those who in 799 had taken part in a conspiracy and had been exiled for that reason.
His death occurred in Rome on January 24, 817, shortly after his return.
