MARIGNOLLI, GIOVANNI. - Franciscan, missionary, also called Giovanni di S. Lorenzo, b. at the end of the 13th century in Florence. Summoned by the Pope to go to the country of Cathay, he set out from Naples in 1339 and returned to Avignon 13 years later, having completed the long journey as far as Khanbalik (Peking) through the Gobi desert, reaching it in 1342, well received by the Great Khan, and staying there three or four years.
Having set out again with a solemn escort provided by the Emperor, he visited a great part of Cathay and took the route back to Europe by sea, touching India, Africa and the Holy Land. On 12 May 1354 he was elected bishop of Bisignano; but when his fame reached the emperor Charles IV of Bohemia, he was chosen by him as counsellor, chaplain and chronologer. In 1356-57 he is found carrying out work of mediation and peace between the Florentines and the Bolognese with the Malatesta. Later he takes part in questions that arose between the Franciscans and the Primate of Ireland. He died before 22 March 1359. In 1898 a memorial plaque was erected to him in the church of S. Croce in Florence.
As chronologer of Charles IV, he wrote a Chronicon Bohemorum, from the origin of the world to his own times, in which he inserted here and there most interesting notices of his itinerary, topographical, ethnographical and historical observations, which make it most precious. Ancient authors also attribute to him various other works, which however have not been preserved.
