In 1550 he was elected bishop of Laodicea and coadjutor to Card. Gonzaga in the diocese of Mantua; and in 1552 he was sent by Paul IV to the court of Madrid on diplomatic missions.
Promoted to the bishopric of Lanciano (Jan. 16, 1760 [sic: 1560]), he participated in the Council of Trent (1562). His participation in the conciliar proceedings was very active, and the final drafting of not a few decrees is owed to him. Under Pius IV he collaborated in the compilation of the Roman Catechism and the revision of liturgical books, and in May 1564 he was sent to Emperor Ferdinand for the resolution of various questions concerning the application of the conciliar canons. By Pius V he was appointed bishop of Alba and apostolic visitor of 25 dioceses in northern Italy for the implementation of the Tridentine reform.
