MITTAREL, I, GIOVANNI BENEDETTO. - Benedictine Camaldolese, born in Venice on 2 Sept. 1708, died at Murano on 14 Aug. He devoted himself, under the guidance of Calogera, to scholarly research. In 1747 he was sent, as chancellor of his Congregation, to Faenza. Abbot of the Venetian province from 1756, he became in 1760 abbot of S. Michele at Murano and in 1764 abbot general of the Order. He held this office in Rome for five years, favored by Clement XIII.
His masterpiece consists of the Annales Carmeladolenses Ordinis S. Benedicti (Venice 1773), which he completed, with the assistance of Anselmo Costadoni, following the model provided by Mabillon: they cover the period from 907 to 1764. Among his minor works is the posthumous Biblioteca codicum manuscriptorum S. Michaelis Venetiarum prope Murianum.
