MITTERMÜLLER, Rupert. - Historian and priest, b. 7 June 1814 at Mainburg in Bavaria, d. 11 Dec. 1893 at Metten. He studied at Landshut, Munich, and Ratisbon and was ordained priest in 1837. He then had charge of souls and in 1842 entered the Benedictine monastery of Metten. From 1846 to 1849 he was administrator of the monastery of Andechs, and from 1849 to 1869 professor of history at Metten, but left the chair with the beginning of the Bavarian Kulturkampf.
He then taught theology at Metten, where he was also librarian and prior. Among his writings are: *Das Kloster Metten und seine Abte* (1856); *Leben und Wirken des frommen Bischofs Michael Wittmann* (1859); *Erbauliche Züge aus dem Leben des Bischofs Michael Wittmann* (1863); *Die heiligen Hostiend und die Juden in Deggendorf* (1866); *Beiträge zu einer Geschichte der ehemaligen Benediktineruniversität in Salzburg* (1889).
