MITTERMÜLLER, RUPERT. - Historian and priest, b. 7 June 1814 at Mainburg in Bavaria, d. 11 Dec. 1893 at Metten. He studied at Landshut, Munich and Regensburg and was ordained a priest in 1837. He then had the care of souls and entered the Benedictinemonastery of Metten in 1842. From 1846 to 1849 he was administrator of the monastery of Andechs and from 1849 to 1869 professor of history at Metten, but he left the chair with the beginning of the Bavarian Kulturkampf.
He then taught theology at Metten, where he was also librarian and prior. Among his writings are remembered: Das Kloster Metten und seine Äbte (1856); Leben und Wirken des frommen Bischofs Michael Wittmann (1859); Erbauliche Züge aus dem Leben des Bischofs Michael Wittmann (1863); Die heiligen Hostien und die Juden in Deggendorf (1866); Beiträge zu einer Geschichte der ehemaligen Benediktineruniversität in Salzburg (1889).
