MITTARELLI, GIOVANNI BENEDETTO. — Camaldolese Benedictine, born in Venice on 2 September 1708, died in Murano on 14 August 1777. Under the guidance of Calogerà, he devoted himself to scholarly research. In 1747 he was sent to Faenza as chancellor of his Congregation. Abbot of the province of Venice from 1756, in 1760 he became abbot of S. Michele in Murano, and in 1764 general abbot of the Order. He held this office in Rome for five years, favored by Clement XIII.
His masterpiece is the Annales Camaldulenses Ordinis S. Benedicti (Venice 1773), which he completed, with the help of Anselmo Costudoni, according to the model offered by Mabillon; they cover the period from 907 to 1764. Among his minor works is the posthumous Bibliotheca codicum manuscriptorum S. Michaelis Venetiarum prope Murianum.
