Negri, Giovanni Francesco

NEGRI, GIOVANNI FRANCESCO. - Cardinal, b. in Genoa on 3 Oct. 1629, d. in Rome on 1 Jan. 1713.

Created by Alexander VII prothonotary participant and referendary of both Signatures, he later held the government of Terni, of Fabriano, of Jesi, of Spoleto, of the Romagna, Umbria and Campania, with the task of eliminating banditry. Clement IX enrolled him among the clerics of the Chamber.

Appointed by Innocent XI treasurer general, he restored the finances of the State. On 2 Sept. 1686 he was, by the same Pontiff, created cardinal deacon of S. Cesareo and sent as legate to Bologna, where, because of his intransigence, he drew upon himself the hatred of the magnates and of the people. From 1687 to 1697 he was bishop of Faenza.
