MAURY, JEAN-SIFFREIN. - Cardinal, b. at Valréas (Avignon) on 26 June 1746, d. at Rome on 11 May 1817. A member of the Académie de France from 1785, in 1787 he was an adviser to Lamoignon, who intended to carry out great judicial reforms. A representative of the clergy in the Estates General of 1789, he attempted, after 14 July, to leave France, but was arrested at Péronne.
He then became the antagonist of Mirabeau and the chief defender, within the Assembly, of the rights of the Pontiff and of the Church. After vigorously opposing the civil constitution of the clergy, he fled from France in 1791, and, after stopping at Koblenz, reached Rome. He was created archbishop of Nicaea by Pius VI, then bishop of Montefiascone and finally cardinal (1794). In 1804 he refused to be ambassador of the King in exile and placed himself at the service of Bonaparte, accepting from him also the office of capitular vicar of Paris; this act was reproached to him, by a brief of 5 Nov. 1810, by Pius VII, a prisoner of the Emperor. After the latter's defeat he was confined in Castel Sant'Angelo and had to renounce the bishopric, but was afterwards liberated through the intercession of Card. Consalvi. He wrote an Essai sur l'éloquence de la chaire.
