MALERMI (MALERBI, MANEBRI), NICCOLÒ. - Camaldolese, born about 1422, died in Venice in 1481. He was abbot of S. Michele di Lemo, S. Mattia, and S. Michele di Murano in Venice.
He is famous for his edition of the Bible in the vernacular: Bible worthily rendered into the vernacular by the most illustrious religious don Nicolao de M., Venetian and most worthy abbot of the Monastery of S. Michele di Lemo (2 folio vols., in 2 columns, Venice 1471, printed with the type of Vendelino da Spira). It is extremely rare. The edition by N. Jenson published two months later (known as the October edition) reproduces that of M. for the New Testament, but differs from it for the Old Testament. M. made use of fourteenth-century manuscript translations, probably (certainly for the Acts) those of D. Cavalca (according to others, of J. Passavanti), revising them and making them more uniform, but often impairing them from a literary standpoint. For the Solomonic books he used Niccolò di Lira. His collaborator was the Florentine Girolamo Squarciafico. More than thirty editions were produced before 1567. C. Negroni reprinted the work at Bologna in 1882.
M. also wrote: Historia monasterii S. Matthiae et alia plura ad chronicon Ordinis pertinentia, the manuscript of which was lost, and Le vite di tutti li santi, with the assistance of the Florentine G. Squarciafico (Venice 1475).
