GIOVANNI FRANCESCO NEGRONI. — Cardinal, born in Genoa on 3 Oct. 1629, died in Rome on 19 Jan. 1713. Created by Alexander VII protonotary participant and referendary of both Signatures, he later governed Terni, Fabriano, Jesi, Spoleto, the Romagna, Umbria and Campania, with the task of eliminating banditry. Clement IX enrolled him among the clerics of the Chamber.
Innocent XI appointed him treasurer general, and he restored the finances of the State. On 2 Sept. 1686 he was created cardinal deacon of S. Cesareo by the same Pope and sent as legate to Bologna, where, because of his intransigence, he incurred the hatred of the magnates and the people. From 1687 to 1697 he was bishop of Faenza.
