Among his writings should be noted the *Dialogus de tribus questionibus* and the autobiographical *Liber de tentationibus suis, varia fortuna et scriptis*, in which he recounts how, while engaged in the study of secular learning, he was assailed by doubts concerning what he read in Sacred Scripture, the nature of God, and His omnipotence and providence, and how he was saved by withdrawing from the clamour of dialectical disputes (which had invaded the cathedral and monastic schools) and devoting himself to meditation on Holy Scripture and the practice of religious life. Like St Peter Damian, he does not condemn dialectic and secular learning as such, but only insofar as he discerns in them a weakening of faith.
