PIETRO dell'AQUILA (Scottellus, di TONNAPARTE).
- Scholastic theologian, born in L'Aquila ca. 1300, died in Triveno in November 1361. He studied in Paris and obtained the degree of master in theology and from posterity the honorary title of *Doctor sufficiens*. Around 1334 he was provincial of the Friars Minor in Tuscany and one of the five doctors who that year examined the commentary on the *Sentences* by Guglielmo Rubione; in 1344 he was chaplain to Joanna I, queen of Naples and Sicily, and in 1346 inquisitor in Florence. Due to a dispute with the Florentine authorities he was accused before Pope Clement VI but, having been found innocent, was appointed on 12 February 1347 to the episcopal see of S. Angelo del Lombardo, from which on 30 May 1348 he was transferred to that of Triveno.
Several works were attributed to him, but until now only his commentary on the four books of the *Sentences* by Lombardus was known, which in substance is an abridgment of Scotus’s commentaries; hence the work, and then the author himself, were called *Scotellus*. Although Pietro in general follows Scotus faithfully, at times he also draws from other Franciscan authors or adds his own contributions. The work, which enjoyed wide circulation, was first printed in Speyer (1480), the last edition being in Rocco (vols. I–III, 1907–1909) and Levanto (vol. IV, 1909), edited by C. Paolini. His *Commentum super librum Sententiarum* was recently discovered by F. S. Schmitt, O.S.B.
