It has an area of 31,400 sq. km., with a population of 280,000 inhabitants, of whom 279,750 are Catholic; it comprises 60 parishes with 107 diocesan priests and 33 regular clergy; it has 5 male and 3 female religious communities (*Ann. Pont. 1952*, p. 364).
The diocese was erected by Pope Benedict XV on 5 February 1917 as a suffragan of Medellín. Its first bishop was Msgr. Maximilian Crespo.
