SANTAROSA-DEROSSI, PIETRO DI. - Statesman, b. in Turin on 12 April 1805, d. there on 5 Aug. 1850.
A student of politics and economics, he traveled extensively throughout Europe. A member, from 1840 onward, of the Turin municipality and founder — together with Cavour, Balbo and Alfieri — of the Risorgimento, on 5 Feb. 1848 he became the promoter of the address of the city of Turin to Charles Albert for the promulgation of the Statute. A deputy of Savigliano to the Subalpine Parliament from the very first legislature, he was minister of Public Works in the Pinelli-Revel ministry. In 1849 he assumed the portfolio of Agriculture and Commerce in the d'Azeglio ministry and supported in council the Siccardi bill for the abolition of the ecclesiastical forum. For this reason, when he fell gravely ill in the summer of 1850 and asked for the consolations of religion, the archbishop of Turin, Msgr. Franzoni — who had already protested against the Siccardi law and had for this suffered a month's imprisonment — ordered that the Viaticum not be brought to the dying man unless he had first withdrawn his own adherence to the anticlerical legislation. The parish priest p. Pittavino, a Servite, communicated the archbishop's decision to him, and the minister — after a long crisis of conscience — refused to disavow his own political activity and died without the Sacraments. The consequence of the painful episode was a popular demonstration beneath the archbishop's residence, the arrest and trial of Franzoni and Pittavino, and the expulsion of the Servites from the city.
Cavour replaced S. in the ministry, thus beginning his political career.
