THEOPHYLAKTOS (FEOFFILAKT), GORSKIJ. —
Russian Protestantizing theologian of the 18th century.
His date of birth is unknown. D. 12 Sept. 1788. In 1769 he was rector of the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy in Moscow; in 1776 bishop of Pereslavl; and in 1788 (?) of Kolomna.
T. is the author of a two-volume dogmatic-moral work that was very well known in Russian seminaries until 1836: I, *Orthodoxae orientalis Ecclesiae dogmata seu doctrina christiana de credendis, usibus eorum qui studio theologico sese consacrarunt addixeruntque adornata accomodataque*, St Petersburg 1783, 1818, 1827; II, *Orthodoxae orientalis Ecclesiae doctrina de agendis*, Leipzig 1784, Moscow 1831. He also wrote a compendium: *Dogmata christiana orthodoxae fidei theologica proposita atque explicata*, Moscow 1773 (in Russian, German and Latin), St Petersburg 1792 (in Russian and French). He is entirely dependent on Theophane Prokopovich and the Lutheran Budde; he accepts the fundamental Protestant principles on private interpretation of Scripture, Scripture as the sole rule of faith, and excludes the “deuterocanonical” books from the canon, etc.
