Theologisch-Praktische Quartalschrift

THEOLOGISCH-PRAKTISCHE QUARTALSCHRIFT. - A journal for the clergy, practical-pastoral in character but on a solid dogmatic and doctrinal foundation, with extensive bibliographies and reviews, as well as reports on the missionary activity of the Church, edited by the professors of the major seminary of Linz (Upper Austria), which deputes two specialists, generally the professors of pastoral theology and of dogmatics, for the actual editing.

It is among the oldest journals of practical theology in the German language. Its founder is the canon Freindaller, of the abbey of St. Florian, near Linz (v.), who, in 1802, initiated a Theologisch-praktische Monatsschrift, which continued, with some change of title and of periodicity, until 1821. With the establishment in the diocese of Linz, in 1846, of the pastoral conferences of the clergy, there revived the desire for a suitable organ, such as the past journal had been, and in 1848 the first issue of the T.-P. Q. appeared, which, with the passage of time, and under able editors, won such renown, even beyond the ocean, that it reached a print run of 18,000 copies. From 1860 the editing has been held by the college of professors of the major seminary. The Nazi regime hindered and then suppressed the journal (1942). In 1946 it resumed publication and, with its 100th volume (1952), considerably increased the size of the individual issues.
