THEOLOGISCH-PRAKTISCHE QUARTALSCHRIFT. - A clergy journal, practical-pastoral in character but resting on a solid dogmatic and doctrinal basis, with extensive bibliographies and reviews, as well as reports on the missionary activity of the Church, edited by the professors of the major seminary of Linz (Upper Austria), who appoint two specialists, generally

the professors of pastoral theology and dogmatics, for the actual editorship.

It is among the oldest journals of practical theology in the German language. Its founder was Canon Freindaller, of the abbey of St. Florian, Linz (v.), who in 1802 began a Theologisch-praktische Monatsschrift, which continued, with some changes of title and periodicity, until

1821. With the establishment in the diocese of Linz, in 1846, of the pastoral conferences of the clergy, the desire for an appropriate organ, such as the former journal had been, revived, and in 1848 the first issue of the T

P. Q. appeared. In the course of time, and under capable editors, it gained such renown, even overseas, that its circulation reached 18,000 copies. Since 1860 the editorship has been entrusted to the body of professors of the major seminary. The Nazi regime hindered and then suppressed the journal (1942). In 1946 it resumed publication and, with its 100th year (1952), considerably increased the size of its individual issues.
