TSCHIDERER ZU GLEIFHEIM, JOHANN NEPOMUK von. - Bishop, b. in Bolzano on 15 April 1777, d. in Trent on 3 December 1860.

A priest in 1800, he was professor of moral theology in Trent from 1807 to 1810, parish priest and dean in Samtheim and Merano, canon and pro-vicar in 1828 for the German-speaking part of the diocese. Auxiliary bishop of Bressanone in 1832 and vicar general for Vorarlberg, he was appointed on 15 July 1834 by the Emperor as prince-bishop of Trent. He worked above all for the formation of the clergy and tried to eliminate divergences and to act as a mediator between the Italians and the Germans of his diocese.

He took an active part in the great conferences of the Austrian episcopate of 1849 (relations between Church and State), and of 1856 (following the Concordat of 1855), and with his prudence and moderation, unlike other colleagues who with their rigidity created useless clashes, he knew how to promote the interests of the Church without provoking harmful reactions.

In 1886 the cause of beatification was introduced in Rome.
