TIMPALDO, EMILIO. — Born in Cephalonia on 8 Oct. 1798, died in Mirano (Venice) on 31 March 1878.
Having moved to the Veneto in 1810, from 1826 he was professor of history, geography, and maritime law at the Imperial Royal Naval College of Venice. During the Venetian revolution of 1848–49, he adhered to Daniele Manin’s provisional government, which entrusted him with a leadership role in the school administration. Though included in the amnesty granted by Francis Joseph after the Austrian restoration, he was nevertheless obliged to leave his professorship. His scholarly output includes books on literature and history and translations from Greek; particularly noteworthy is the *Istoria della letteratura greca profana dalle sue origini alla presa di Costantinopoli*. Yet T.’s name is chiefly associated with the ten volumes of the *Bibliografia degli italiani illustri del sec. XVIII e contemporanei* (Venice 1834–45), compiled under his direction by a select group of specialists in various fields and still today a valuable research tool.
