Lettera Apostolica che istituisce l'Ordine Equestre di San Gregorio Magno

Lettera apostolica di papa Gregorio XVI ·

LXII. LETTERE APOSTOLICHE

LXII. APOSTOLIC LETTERS
By which the constitution of the equestrian order of St. Gregory the Great is established.
GREGORY PP. XVI.
for perpetual remembrance of the matter.

1 That it is a matter of the greatest concern to all who hold supreme power to bestow rewards of virtue, insignia of honor, and monuments of praise upon those whom they know to have deserved well of the commonwealth, this Our predecessors, the Roman Pontiffs, have been accustomed to do in accordance with the circumstances of persons, times, and deeds, toward those who have aided the dominion of the Holy Roman Church by force of arms, counsel, and other right actions. Considering these things and deliberating on the honor to be shown to those who have rendered faithful and constant service, even in difficult times, to the pontificate, it has pleased Us, following the custom and institution of Our predecessors, to establish an equestrian order, into which men of proven faith toward the Apostolic See, by the authority of the Supreme Pontiffs, may be admitted, whom either the excellence of their lineage, or the glory

2 PP. XVI.

3 of their deeds, or the administration of distinguished offices, or finally other grave reasons, We ourselves shall judge worthy, that they may be honored by public testimony of pontifical affection. For from this it is evident that not only is a reward conferred upon virtue, but also incentives are added to others openly, by which they may be more earnestly stirred day by day to good and right action. Wherefore by these Our apostolic letters We establish an equestrian order, which, both from the special reverence of Our affection toward Our most holy predecessor Gregory the Great, and on account of his name assumed when We accepted the pontificate imposed upon Our humility, We will to be named after St. Gregory the Great, reserving to Us and to the Roman Pontiff existing for the time being the right of choosing knights, whom it shall be evident are commended by the praise of virtues, the honesty of their condition, the splendor of their offices, and exceptional diligence in conducting affairs, and finally by the common approval of good men.

4 The particular insignium of the order shall be an octagonal cross skillfully wrought from gold, having a red surface, in the center of which, as on a small medallion, shall stand forth the image of St. Gregory the Great, artfully engraved. The ribbon for sustaining it shall be of red silk, whose extreme edges shall be distinguished by a yellow color.

5 Since, moreover, certain ranks in equestrian orders designate the dignity of those who are enrolled in them, We have established four grades of knights in the Gregorian order, of which the first shall be called knights of the grand cross of the first class, the second knights of the grand cross of the second class, the third knights commanders, the fourth knights simply.

6 A long silk band, painted with the two colors of the order, placed upon the right shoulder and extending across to the left side, and sustaining the grand cross, shall be the insignium of knights of the first kind, who shall moreover wear on the middle left side of the breast, attached to the garment, another larger cross, adorned with rays and gems on all sides and wrought with magnificent workmanship. Knights of the second class shall have the grand cross, like a medallion, on the left side of the breast, besides another large cross suspended from the neck by a silk ribbon.

7 Knights commanders shall wear the grand cross, which shall hang from a silk ribbon inserted at the neck, but shall lack the privilege of wearing the aforesaid medallion, or another cross on the left side of the breast.

8 Knights of the fourth order shall wear a small cross at the breast in the left part of the garment, according to the common custom of knights.

9 Moreover, We will that all those who are honored by this public testimony of pontifical will be admonished to observe carefully that rewards are attached to virtues, and that nothing should be more diligently a matter of concern to them than that they sustain abundantly the expectation and confidence which they have aroused by deeds gloriously accomplished, and that they show themselves day by day more worthy of the honor conferred upon them. This indeed is the reason for the undertaking of this counsel, this the principal condition of the office itself, to which it will be most fully satisfied by constant faith toward God and the prince, as is inscribed on the reverse of the cross: and thus all good men, and especially those to whom it most concerns on account of the connection with the order, will rejoice at the auspicious and happy progress of Our institution.

10 ANNO MDCCCXXXI.

11 than that they should abundantly sustain by their deeds the expectation and confidence which they have aroused, and that day by day they should show themselves worthy of the honour conferred upon them. This indeed is the reason for undertaking this counsel, this is the principal condition of the office itself, to which it will be most fitly accomplished by constant faith toward God and the prince, as is inscribed on the reverse of the cross: and thus all good men, and especially those to whom it most pertains on account of the connection of the order, will rejoice at the fortunate and happy progress of Our institution.

12 Given at Rome at St. Mary Major, under the fisherman's ring on the first day of September in the thousand eight hundred thirty-first year, in the first year of Our pontificate.
