SOFONISBA ANGUISSOLA. — Painter, born at Cremona in 1527, died at Palermo in 1625. Through her first masters, B. Campi and B. Gatti known as il Sojaro, she came into contact with the leading artists of her time, whose forms and styles she reproduced, though through her own meticulous temperament. Her contemporaries enthusiastically celebrated her fame, which she achieved especially through her activity as a portraitist. In 1559 she was summoned to Spain by Philip II. Alongside the numerous portraits in collections and museums in Europe and America, few sacred works remain: a *Sacred Family* in Bergamo, a *Betrothal of St. Catherine* in London, and a *Pietà* in Milan (Brera).
