ANGULO, PEDRO de. - Spanish missionary, born at Burgos. In 1524 he went to America in search of adventure and glory. Four years later, however, moved by zeal to make the cause of the Indians his own, he entered the Dominican Order at the convent of Mexico and followed Fr. Las Casas (v.) to Peru. In 1541 he was sent to the Dominican mission in Guatemala, a mission which he brought to great flourishing, so much so that ten years later it was erected into an autonomous Dominican province. Finally, A. devoted himself to the conversion of the barbarous peoples living in northern Guatemala and initiated them into the works of civilization, thus becoming the founder of the city of S. Domingo de Vera Paz, soon erected into a diocese, of which he was elected first bishop in 1561. He died, however, on 1 Apr. 1562, before even receiving the papal bulls, during a journey to Guatemala. Of him we possess a bibliographical study on the Dominicans in Peru, published in 1908.
