ANGUISH OF PLACE. - It is one of the canonical causes admitted for the granting of a dispensation from matrimonial impediments (especially from impediments of consanguinity, affinity, and spiritual or legal cognation). It exists when the village or hamlet where the bride-to-be (not the man) has her domicile does not comprise more than 300 families, i.e., about 1,500 inhabitants.
Exceptionally, it may also apply in more populous places if the woman’s kinship is so extensive that it is difficult for her to find a husband of equal standing outside of II. In areas of mixed religion, the number of Catholic inhabitants is taken into account.
