CORRADO of SASSONY (Holzinger, Holthniker, Holtkynker). - Franciscan, preacher, and ascetical writer, born in Braunschweig in the early 13th century; died in Bologna on 30 May 1279. Reader at the Studium in Hildesheim, he was elected Minister Provincial of Saxony in 1247. For sixteen years he governed his province with zeal and prudence; in 1262 he resigned this office at his own request, but was re-elected at the Chapter of Magdeburg in 1272. He died while traveling to the General Chapter in Assisi.
Among his works are Commentaries on the Four Books of the *Sentences*, and a large number of unpublished Sermons, such as the *Sermones de Tempore*, *de Sanctis*, *de Communi Sanctorum*; a *Quadragesimale*; and perhaps also the *Sermones ad Religiosos et Predatos* from cod. G. IX. 19 of Siena (14th century). However, the most famous work of C., attributed for several centuries to St. Bonaventure, is the *Speculum Beatae Mariae Virginis*, also known under the title *Expositio de Salutatione Angelica*, for which he earned a distinguished place among the ascetical writers of the 13th century. C. holds the opinion of the sanctification of Mary before her birth (lect. XI); and he repeats the celebrated phrase: *«Maiorem mundum posset facere Deus, maiorem coelum posset facere Deus, maiorem matrem quam matrem Dei non posset facere Deus.»*
