Also known as:
German: Konrad von Urach, Konrad von Zähringen
CONRAD OF ZÄHRINGEN, Blessed. - Cistercian, cardinal, also called of Urach (because he was the son of that Count Egino IV), b. in the last quarter of the 12th century, d. in Rome (?) on 30 September 1227. From being a canon of Liège he entered in 1199 the Cistercian monastery of Villers-en-Brabant, of which he became prior, then abbot (1209-14). Afterwards he was abbot of Clairvaux (1214), then of Cîteaux (1217). Honorius III created him cardinal bishop of Porto and S. Rufina (1219) and consecrated him himself.
He had two important legations: the first in France against the Albigensians (1220-23); the second in Germany for the preaching of the Crusade in favor of the Holy Land (1224-26). While the fruit of this particular mission was mediocre, he contributed much to the improvement of ecclesiastical and conventual discipline, with synods, foundations of monasteries and, when necessary, with punishments that were also severe. The Cistercians call him blessed, but he has no cult.
