ENRICO of CHARAVALLE, Blessed. — Born at the castle of Marey near Cluny in Burgundy to noble parents, he entered the monastery at Chiaravalle around 1156.
In 1160 he became abbot of Hautecombe in Savoy, in 1176 of Chiaravalle, and in 1179 cardinal bishop of Albano. He died on 10 January 1189 in Arras; he was buried at Chiaravalle.
He was entrusted with delicate missions by the Popes: in 1162 he mediated negotiations between Alexander III and the archbishop of Reims; in 1178 he reconciled Henry II, king of England, with the Church of Canterbury; in 1186 he served as papal legate in the struggle against the Albigensians; and he preached the crusade, to which he attracted the emperor Frederick I. An incomplete collection of his letters survives, as does his work, *De peregrinatione civitatis Dei* (PL 204, 213-492).
