HENRY, Prince of Congo. — b. ca. 1495, son of Dom Affonso, later king of Congo. In 1508 Dom E. was sent to Lisbon to be educated in the convent of St Eloy of the Loios, Canons Regular of St John the Evangelist, where he pursued his studies. In 1513 he accompanied King Affonso’s embassy to Rome. In 1518 he was appointed titular bishop of Utica and auxiliary bishop of Funchal for the Congo, and in 1519 or 1520 he received priestly ordination; then, toward the end of 1520 or early in 1521, he was consecrated bishop. In 1521, accompanied by four Loios as theological counsellors, he returned to Congo. He was held in the capital Baja by his father and carried on fruitful activity there. Dom E. died before 1530.
