ENRICO, prince of CONGO. – Born around 1495, son of dom Affonso, later king of Congo, dom E. was sent to Lisbon in 1508 to be educated in the convent of S. Eloy of the Loios, Canons Regular of S. John the Evangelist, where he pursued his studies. In 1513 he accompanied King Affonso’s embassy to Rome. In 1518 he was appointed titular bishop of Utica and auxiliary to the bishop of Funchal for Congo, and in 1519 or 1520 he received priestly ordination; then, toward the end of 1520 or at the beginning of 1521, he was consecrated bishop. In 1521, accompanied by four Loios as theological advisers, he returned to Congo. Retained by his father in the capital, Baja, he developed a fruitful ministry. Dom E. died before 1530.
