ENRICO, PRINCIPE DEL CONGO

HENRY, Prince of Kongo. - B. ca. 1495, son of dom Affonso, later king of the Congo, dom E. in 1508 was sent to Lisbon to be educated in the convent of St. Eloy of the Loios, Canons Regular of St. John the Evangelist, where he did his studies. In 1513 he accompanied the embassy of King Affonso to Rome. In 1518 he was named titular bishop of Utica and auxiliary of the bishop of Funchal for the Congo, and in 1519 or 1520 he received priestly ordination; then, toward the end of 1520 or at the beginning of 1521, he was consecrated bishop. In 1521, accompanied by 4 Loios as theological advisers, he returned to the Congo. Kept by his father in the capital Baja, he developed a fruitful activity. Dom E. died before 1530.
