ENRICO di CHIARAVALLE, Blessed. - Born at the castle of Marey near Cluny in Burgundy to noble parents, he entered the monastery of Chiaravalle around 1156.
In 1160 he became abbot of Hautecombe in Savoy, in 1176 of Chiaravalle, and in 1179 cardinal bishop of Albano. He died on 1 January 1189 at Arras; he was buried at Chiaravalle.
He received delicate assignments from the Popes: in 1162 he was mediator in the negotiations between Alessandro III and the archbishop of Reims; in 1178 he reconciled Enrico II, king of England, with the Church of Canterbury; in 1186 he was papal legate in the struggle against the Albigensians; he preached the crusade in which he enlisted the emperor Federico I. An incomplete collection of his letters has been preserved, as has his work, De peregrinaute civitate Dei (PL 204, 213-492).
