HENRY OF CLAIRVAUX, Blessed. - Born in the castle of Marey near Cluny in Burgundy to noble parents, he entered the monastery at Clairvaux around 1156.
In 1160 he became abbot of Hautecombe in Savoy, in 1176 of Clairvaux, and in 1179 cardinalbishop of Albano. He died on 1 January 1189 in Arras; he was buried at Clairvaux.
He received delicate assignments from the Popes: in 1162 he was a mediator in the negotiations between Alexander III and the archbishop of Reims; in 1178 he reconciled Henry II, king of England, with the Church of Canterbury; in 1186 he was papal legate in the struggle against the Albigensians; he preached the crusade, to which he attracted the emperor Frederick I. Of his letters an incomplete collection is preserved, as is also incomplete his work De peregrinante civitate Dei (PL 204, 213-492).
