ENGELBERT I of COLOGNE, St. — Born c. 1185. Son of Count E. of Berg, he studied at the cathedral school of Cologne. In the conflict over the imperial throne between Otto IV and Philip of Swabia, he was excommunicated and deposed by Pope Innocent III because of his political stance, but in 1208 he submitted to the Pontiff and in 1212, as penance, fought against the Albigensians. Elected archbishop of Cologne in 1216, he was consecrated in 1217. He took an active part in imperial politics, acting as guardian of Henry, son of Frederick II, and regent of Germany; he protected ecclesiastical institutions, thereby incurring the hatred of the nobles, and was killed by his own nephew Frederick of Isenburg on 17 Nov. 1223. His feast is celebrated only from 1618 onwards (7 Nov.).
