Emmerano, Saint

EMMERANO, saint. -
Missionary bishop in
Bavaria or at the court of the
Bavarian dukes in the 7th or
at the beginning of the 8th
century. His biographer Aribo,
bishop of Freising (ca. 722), says
that he was born at Poitiers in
Aquitaine and was bishop of his
native city. He was certainly a
bishop, but perhaps an itinerant
bishop, without a fixed see.
According to Aribo, E. left Gaul
to preach the Gospel to the A-
vars in Pannonia, but remained
for 3 years in Bavaria.
Shortly before a journey to
Rome he was barbarously
tortured by Lumberto, son
of the Bavarian duke Uta, on
the false suspicion that he had
seduced his sister. He died
shortly afterward, near the ducal
estate of Aschheim, where he was
buried in the church of St. Pe-
ter, and after 40 days was trans-
ferred to Regensburg, to the church
of St. George, later called that of
St. Emmerano. From the outset
he was venerated as a martyr.
His feast is on 22 Sept.
