ARBEO (Arbio, Aribo), bishop of FREISING. - Born c. 723 at Maia, near Merano; studied at Freising (Bavaria), where he later became episcopal chancellor. In 763 he was elected abbot of Scharnitz and in 765 bishop of Freising. He died in 783. He founded monasteries and wrote the lives of St Emmeran of Regensburg and St Corbinian of Freising (ed. in MGH, Script. Rerum Merov., IV, pp. 472-524 and VI, pp. 560-93).
